Equipment Based Pilates

What is it?

“Pilates develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit” – Joseph Pilates

Pilates is a series of exercises designed to help your body function better. You begin by concentrating on the deep abdominal muscles that support your spine and progress by bringing in other muscle groups, strengthening those that are weak and stretching those that are tight.

Benefits include: increased mobility, flexibility and strength, improved balance, reduction in posture related aches and pains and lower stress levels

Pilates can be performed on specialist equipment which offers both support and resistance via the use of springs and pulleys.  Using the equipment can take Pilates to a higher level encouraging greater precision and improved core stability, strength and endurance.  Alternatively, the supportive element and smooth motion of the equipment means it is ideal for those who may find mat work or other forms of exercise too painful.

Who is it for?

Equipment Pilates is available to people of all ages although we prefer to see under 16s on a 1:1 basis. The beauty of the equipment is that programmes can be designed to specifically address your needs. It can help you manage a range of muscular and joint conditions improving core strength, flexibility and general fitness, but also to train for specific activities such as running, swimming and dance.

What to expect

Working one-to-one, or in small groups, our qualified instructors (who are fully trained Chartered Physiotherapists) will work with you applying physiotherapy skills of assessment and rehabilitation to specifically tailor exercises and routines to work on areas of weakness, or those that need improvement

Using a Reformer, Exo-chair and other equipment, your instructor will make a series of slight adjustments using the springs, bars and pully systems to tailor your sessions to your exact needs. These ingenious machines take Pilates to a much higher level, encouraging greater precision and improved core stability, strength and endurance. With the added advantage of smooth motion, the equipment supports you whilst exercising, providing relief from pain or discomfort that you may experience with mat based Pilates or other forms of exercise.

So, whether you are new to Pilates, or already use this type of exercise as part of your regime, this equipment will help you to discover a new kind of strength, here’s what some of clients experienced:

“ Over the last 2 years of rehab I’ve done lots of different exercises, some extreme that have worked me hard. This is the only one that I’ve had to ask to stop mid-session to get a drink of water, that’s how hard it pushes you, do not underestimate this fantastic form of exercise.”

“I was completely new to Equipment based Pilates, and thoroughly enjoyed my session at Courtyard. The exercises I carried out were tailored to my exact level of ability and whilst I could feel the resistance of the machines I felt fully supported, almost a sense of floating, it’s an amazing form of exercise and I can’t wait to book further sessions.”

An individual, one hour session with your instructor is required prior to attending any of our Pilates sessions. This will enable you to receive a full assessment and to learn the basics of The Pilates technique.

Equipment Pilates is offered at Courtyard in the following formats:-

  • 1:1 sessions
  • 1:2 sessions
  • Equipment Pilates Package: Individual 1 hour assessment, 2x half hour follow up, 6 group sessions, 1 hour individual 1:1 follow-up.

The Equipment Pilates Package is ideal for anyone who is new to Pilates or never used the equipment before, as well as those looking to overcome and manage injury, or improve fitness with a focus on your specific areas of weakness.

Physiotherapist and Pilates Instructor

I have been working as a chartered physiotherapist for fourteen years since qualifying in 2003. Working in a variety of clinical settings gave me excellent insight into a wide range of patients, conditions and rehabilitation techniques.

Here’s What Our Clients Think of Us

For Karla (Hypnotherapist)

“I was here on 3-day work experience. The first day I was nervous but there was a ‘family atmosphere’ where everyone was really welcoming and made me feel comfortable. I enjoyed every minute and would love to come again.” Charlie Edwards

For Vicky (Vim and Vigour)

“I am now nearing the end of my second course of Vim and Vigour sessions. I must say, along with thoroughly enjoying myself I have noticed an improvement in my balance, core strength and flexibility over this period. My thanks go to Vicky who has focused the activities towards my particular needs and has also raised my awareness of how to combat the ageing issues my body is facing. Thank you.” Karen McDonald

For Jo (Physiotherapy)

“I have to say that in all my years, working and coaching, and being treated myself, that was one of the finest pieces of work I’ve ever witnessed. My daughter is a very complex, head strong young lady. I am truly in awe of the way Jo took on the mental and physical challenges in a way she could accept. Very grateful for all you’ve done”

For Jo Roberts (Equipment Based Pilates)

“Over the last 2 years of rehab, I’ve done lots of different exercises, some extreme that have worked me hard. This is the only one that I’ve had to ask to stop mid-session to get a drink of water, that’s how hard it pushes you, do not underestimate this fantastic form of exercise.” Jerry Fowler
