What It Is
The vestibular system plays a vital role in balance, relying on signals passed from the inner ear to the brain. When these signals are disrupted, miscommunication between the balance systems can occur, leading to false sensations of movement and symptoms such as vertigo, dizziness and unsteadiness.
Vestibular rehabilitation is a specialist therapy designed to retrain and strengthen this system, using a combination of repositioning manoeuvres and tailored exercise programmes.
Common conditions
Vestibular rehabilitation involves specific exercises and techniques designed to help reduce dizziness, improve balance, and retrain your body’s response to movement. During your appointment, your therapist will assess your symptoms, identify triggers, and guide you through a personalised exercise plan to restore confidence and stability in daily activities.
- Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
- Meniere’s disease
- Labyrinthitis
- Vestibular neuritis
- Head trauma
- Neurological conditions affecting balance
What to expect
Vestibular rehabilitation can help in the treatment and management of:
- Vestibular manoeuvres such as those used for BPPV, to reposition inner ear crystals and relieve vertigo.
- Specialised exercise programmes to improve gaze stabilisation, postural control, balance and reduce motion sensitivity.
- Compensation training to help the brain adapt to and overcome conflicting balance signals by strengthening the connections between the eyes, inner ear and muscles.
Over time, these exercises encourage the brain to make better use of signals from other senses to support balance and reduce vertigo. They may also help to ease associated symptoms such as nausea, headaches and difficulty walking.
Vestibular Rehabilitation is available at both our Dursley and Malmesbury clinics.
